Golden State Opportunity

The organization behind CalEITC4Me, which gets tax credits to the Californians who earned them. This program is what comes after the refund.

Start with what is on your mind

Three ways in. Pick the one that sounds like you.

Not sure? It does not matter which you pick. Your adviser looks at the whole picture either way.

Free debt payoff planner

The Debt Snowball, right on this page.

List what you owe, pick which debt goes first, and see when you’ll be done and how much interest you’ll save. Nothing to download, nothing to sign up for, and nothing you type leaves your phone.

The web version of Golden State Opportunity’s Debt Snowball spreadsheet. Same math, no download.

What you owe

One line per debt: the balance, the interest rate on your statement (APR), and the minimum payment it asks for.

What you can pay each month

Across all your debts together. Anything above the minimums is your snowball: the extra that goes to one debt at a time.

Which debt first

Your plan

Paid off in this order

What you owe, month by month

Total balance over time: this plan, and paying only the minimums

The three orders, side by side

Assumes the rates and minimums stay as entered and nothing new goes on the cards. Interest is added once a month, at the yearly rate divided by 12. Credit cards actually charge interest daily, so a card can cost a little more than shown: often 1 to 4% more interest, more when the payment barely beats the interest.

    Short money guides

    Three good places to start.

About five minutes each, and each ends with one step you can take this week. They open right here. Looking for something else? Search all twelve.

Why you have never had this

Advice exists. There is just a wall in front of it.

The typical firm wants a six-figure account before it will talk to you. Hourly planning runs hundreds. For a working family that is not a barrier — it is a wall.

This program takes it down. The person you meet is a volunteer financial adviser, and an adviser’s time normally costs about $300 an hour. Here it costs you nothing, because they are donating it.

    Typical minimum account$100,000
    Median hourly planning$300/hr
    With Advisers Give Back$0

Median rate: The Kitces Report, 2024, survey of 621 advisers.

    How it works

Three steps. The first takes about three minutes.

    Tell us what’s going on

A few plain questions about what you want help with. No documents, nothing to upload, and nobody asks about your immigration status.

Pick a time. Your adviser calls you.

Choose a real open time. The call comes through our line, so your phone shows our number. You’ll know your adviser by first name only.

    Do the plan

You leave with two or three specific things to do next, in an order that makes sense. 68% of clients finish their first task.

    Worth knowing before you book

Is there money from past years nobody claimed?

Plenty of California families never collected credits they were entitled to — because they did not file, or because nobody told them they qualified.

It is not too late. In 2026 you can still file for 2023, 2024 and 2025 and be paid what you are owed. The first of those windows closes on April 15, 2027.

Your adviser can tell you which credits you may still be owed and what it would take to claim them. For the filing itself, Golden State Opportunity prepares taxes for free at caleitc4me.org.

Federal refunds can be claimed for three years. California allows four, so 2022 may still count for state credits.

    Why people trust it

Built so there is nothing to sell you.

Every adviser is a fiduciary, which means they must put your interests first. Through this program they cannot sell you a product, cannot earn a commission on anything you do, and cannot take you on as a paying client afterwards. That last rule is the one that matters: it removes any reason for them to steer you.

    Calls through our line

The adviser calls you through our line, so your phone shows our number, not the adviser’s. You decide what gets discussed.

    Your information is not sold

Your adviser and a small AGB support team see what you tell us, and the companies that run our phone, text and records systems handle it for us. We never sell it, and we never ask for your Social Security number or ITIN.

    You never have to pay

Not now, not later, not for paperwork. We may ask once if you’d like to give later so someone else can get the same help; your answer changes nothing. If anyone asks you to pay and says they are from us, that is not us.

    Questions people ask first

    Before you decide.

Is this really free? What’s the catch?

There is no catch. It is free because the advisers volunteer their time and Advisers Give Back is a nonprofit. There is no product to buy and no commission involved. During signup you will be asked whether you would like to give afterwards, if the meeting was useful, to help fund someone else’s meeting. Giving is optional, and your answer has no effect on the service you get.

Will my adviser try to sell me something?

No, and it is not a matter of good intentions — it is a rule of the program. They cannot sell you anything and cannot take you on as a paying client afterwards. They earn nothing based on what you do with your money.

I earn very little. Is this worth it for me?

Yes. There is no minimum income and no minimum savings. Much of what advisers work through in these conversations is practical: credits that were never claimed, withholding set wrong, a debt that can be restructured. None of that requires you to have money saved.

What actually happens on the call?

The adviser calls you through our line. You’ll know your adviser by first name only. You decide what gets discussed — anything you would rather not say, do not say. Calls are not recorded. If that ever changes, we’ll ask you first, and you can say no. If an adviser ever makes you uncomfortable or tries to sell you something, tell us at info@advisersgiveback.org. Nobody is going to tell you what you spent wrong. It is not a review and it is not a score.

I file with an ITIN. Can I take part, and which credits can I claim?

Yes, you can take part. The program never asks for your ITIN or Social Security number, and never asks about your immigration status or your family’s.

On credits, the state and federal rules point opposite ways, so it is worth being exact:

    • California’s CalEITC and Young Child Tax Credit — yes with an ITIN.
    • The federal EITC — no with an ITIN.
    • The federal Child Tax Credit — it depends on the year. If your children have valid Social Security numbers, an ITIN filer could claim it for 2023 and 2024. From 2025 the law changed and the filer needs an SSN too. So a mixed-status family may be owed it for two of the three years still open.

    Ready when you are

    Spots are limited.

Advisers volunteer their hours, so the number of meetings each week is finite. Signing up takes about three minutes, and there is no account to create until the very end.
